Ottawa is the national capital of a G7 country and a modern city. The location of the National Capital Region, straddling Eastern Ontario and western Québec provides the scene for an exciting and vibrant English and French cultural mix. Its rivers, parks and pathways provide recreational opportunities all year round, are easily accessible and serve as the background for festivals and celebrations as varied as the spring Tulip Festival, Canada Day, the Chambre Music Festival and Winterlude. The Region is richly served by Museums and cultural institutions such as the Canadian Museum of History, the National Gallery and the National Arts Centre. Government institutions such as Parliament, the Governor General’s residence and the Supreme Court of Canada are accessible to the public. In addition to the English and French character of the Region, a rich cultural mosaic exists in the area that has spawned one of the best choices of restaurants of any city in Canada. And did we mention that Ottawa is the northern terminus of the World Heritage Site Rideau Canal?
An exchange with the Friendship Force of the Canadian Capital Region will expose you to the charms of our region, both urban and rural. Depending on when you come, you may see the thousands of tulips on display during the Tulip Festival, the joyful celebrations of Canada Day or the 7.5 kilometre skating rink on the Rideau Canal during winter. You may visit the Canadian Museum of History or the National Gallery. You’ll experience the countryside and you may see the Gatineau Park, or drive through Omega Park, an area showcasing our flora and fauna – perhaps even having the chance to feed a moose! You’ll come to understand a bit of the history that has formed the region and the country. You can be sure that you’ll eat well!
